Don Siegel's adaptation of the previously filmed Ernest Hemingway story stars Lee Marvin as professional hit man Charlie. After Charlie and colleague Lee (Clu Gulager) force their way into a school for the blind and kill Johnny North (John Cassavetes), one of the teachers, Charlie wonders why the victim offered so little resistance--and why he was paid so much for the job. He also recalls rumors that Johnny was mixed up in a million-dollar heist. They visit Johnny's former partner, Earl Sylvester (Claude Akins), and learn that he had been a race-car driver. Led astray by femme fatale Shiela Farr (Angie Dickinson) before a big race, he racked up his car, ending his driving career. Earl spots Shiela with the wealthy Browning (Ronald Reagan) and realizes that his friend's been set up. Shiela approaches Johnny, who's working as a mechanic, and persuades the driver to take a job as wheelman in a mail-truck robbery Browning's devised. She plans for the two of them to double cross Browning and take off with the money. The film is a lean and mean daylight noir, with an entertainingly sociopathic Marvin. Reagan is good in a villainous role he later regretted having done. [More]

This take on the story by the invariably overrated Don Siegel is probably the most brightly lit, atmosphere-challenged movie ever to be tagged as noir. Full Review |

The 1946 and 1964 versions of The Killers are vastly different, except for a couple of plot points, like the lack of surprise and failure to run the hitmen note with their target, and the double cross that is revealed at the end Full Review |

Though the film does not stand up to the 1946 version with Burt Lancaster, it has its own pleasures, including Marvin's rather likable role of an assassin, the exciting robbery sequence, and, of course, the villainous Reagan getting his just desserts. Full Review |

The second film version (1964) of Ernest Hemingway's short story, directed by Don Siegel with far more energy than Robert Siodmak could muster for his overrated 1946 effort. Full Review |

Um roteiro intrincado (ainda que excessivamente reminiscente de "Cidadão Kane") que se beneficia ainda mais graças à direção segura de Siegel e ao elenco excepcional (até Reagan, um ator geralmente medíocre, está bem).

A familiar tale of robbery and betrayal unfolds, not enhanced by the glossy colour but given a terrific boost by the fact that the two killers stick around and are superbly characterised by Marvin and Gulager. Full Review |

Movie remakes seem to be pouring out faster and more frequently than ever before, and it's rare that a remake gets even close to an original, much less equals it or surpasses it. Full Review |

Ernest Hemingway's classic short story is updated and shot in garish colour, with considerably more violence. Full Review |

Even in today’s violence-jaded era, the 1964 version of The Killers packs a punch when needed. Full Review |

The selfish cynicism on display, the every-man-and-woman-for-themselves bravado is a more cinematic than televisual conceit. Full Review |

Without pretension The Killers occupies its genre and welcomes each convention. It comes, however, late, and such conventions are worn for their familiarity. Full Review |

Ronald Reagan's last role proved to be just as scary as his actual presidency. Clu Gulager rocks, as always.
