Powerful Henry II (Peter O'Toole) favors his youngest son John (Nigel Terry), while his strong-willed wife Eleanor (Katherine Hepburn) feels the honor should be bestowed upon eldest son Richard the Lionhearted (Anthony Hopkins, in his screen debut). This disagreement leads the family to a war of wills that will stress every bond of love, trust, and honor. This acclaimed adaptation of James Goldman's play was also the first film for Timothy Dalton. Academy Award Nominations: 7, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor--Peter O'Toole. Academy Awards: 3, including Best (Adapted) Screenplay, Best Actress--Katharine Hepburn (shared with Barbra Streisand - "Funny Girl"). [More]

...outdoorsy and fun, full of the kind of plotting and action people used to go to just plain movies for.

Director Anthony Harvey opened up Goldman's play into authentic spaces far from any proscenium, and remained faithful to an energetic drama propelled by its performances and dialogue.

The cast is truly in top form. Hepburn and O'Toole play off of each other beautifully.

A trashy, gossipy, anachronistic marital drama, about the royal squabbles of Henry II and exiled wife, is well-acted by Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn, who won a third Oscar for her wicked scheming; watch for Anthony Hopkins in his screen debut

Less historical spectacle than vicious farce, this boasts a great cast spitting venomous dialogue and a young Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton as gay lovers destined to rule England and France.

You'll either love or reject the idea of history as sitcom; either way, the lead performances are hard to deny.

Theatrical and talky, but it's good talk by great performers.

A must-see for perhaps the most scathing verbal pyrotechnics ever committed to film.
