Consensus: A class satire in a class of its own, My Man Godfrey's screwball comedy is as sharp as the social commentary is biting.

On a scavenger hunt for a society ball, haughty Cornelia Bullock discovers Godfrey, a dirty, dishevelled bum lurking around the city dump. She's looking for a "forgotten man" and Godfrey fits the bill perfectly. Hoping to win her first prize, she offers him five dollars to come along with her. Proud and dignified, he refuses, casting her aside. Minutes later, when her lovely younger sister Irene makes the same request, an enamored Godfrey accepts. The hunt sets off an unusual chain of events that bring Godfrey into the Bullock household as a permanent fixture. He'll become deeply embroiled in their family saga before anyone learns his true identity. Re-made in 1957. [More]

Reviews for My Man Godfrey
A Great Depression film so blackly off its rocker it seems in many ways to be of our time more than its own.
...clearly defines the screwball comedy...Powell and Lombard at their best and funniest. Yet...with a serious touch, juxtaposing the worlds of the haves and have-nots.
uses the screwball genre in unexpected ways, infusing social critique and a political message
My Man Godfrey (1936) is one of the 1930s' delightful, classic screwball comedies. Directed by Gregory La Cava for Universal, the definitive social comedy
