The screenplay of Rocky is purest Hollywood make-believe of the 1930's, but there would be nothing wrong with that, had the film been executed with any verve.
I personally disagree with this review but you guys really need to chill. He has a right to his own opinion as much as you do. I can guarantee that there are several films considered classics that you dislike. No need to freak out at him because you disagree with him.

I'll admit it: I didn't like Rocky. However, his point in his blurb is COMPLETELY wrong. If Rocky was pure Hollywood 1930s make-believe, Rocky would have knocked Apollo Creed out in the first round and the movie would have ended with Stallone and Shire looking out the back window of a "Just Married"-mobile, a la "The Graduate." I'll at least give it credit for having some realism.
It'd be the 1960's if it was like 'The Graduate.' Also it wouldn't be a happy ending if it was 'The Graduate', that's what makes that scene so heartbreaking, he (Benjamin) knows he'll never actually be with Elaine that's why they don't make eye contact towards the end. A real happy ending would have been them kissing.
To say this movie was executed badly is one thing--it's a debatable position but I'd respect it. To say that it was executed "without any verve," though, is just preposterous; Stallone gives his best performance by a mile in this film, which was really an all-or-nothing bet on him; his passion oozes from every scene he's in.
