Sometimes I think Mr. Ebert sees too many films. He gets it totally wrong when he says Shaw doesn't know that Newman and Redford know each other. One of the biggest parts of the scheme is that Redford is an underling to Newman and he makes this fact VERY clear to Shaw from the beginning.

What on earth are you actually complaining about? Ebert gave this film four stars and praised Newman and Redford' performances. George Roy Hill's directing.
