'The Sting' is lead by two excellent leads, an excellent cast, and excellent characters - when you can depend on those things clicking together, a movie this simple and predictable still manages to be pure genius.

The Sting is great cinema. Redford and Newman show how well they play off each other in so many films. The story is charming and entertaining.

Fabulous acting with a great plot.

Delightfully stylish, but "The Sting" never comes close to achieving the same level of character depth or thematic resonance of George Roy Hill's previous collaboration with the two lead fellas. Nor does it try to, and that's okay. Redford and Newman are still fantastic together, though. A fun caper flick with great music.

These two are just Ranked.

Newman and Redford are at it again, but this time they're not outlaws of the West, but of 1930's Chicago. I feel as though this movie actually surpasses Butch Cassidy greatly, and Shaw's performance deserves more recognition.

A light hearted, stylish fun work of pure high ranking entertainment with star shining performances from Newman and Redford.

This is a very unique film with a classic, old-fashioned style that carries the whole film. The characters all have their own charm, and their performances are thoroughly enjoyable. The aforementioned old-fashioned style is elaborate, and is exhibited very well. The music is enjoyable, and the film's clever use of illustration. Even if you don't pay attention to the plot, you probably will notice the charmingly archaic style. Yes, I'm mainly praising the film because of its style, but who hasn't? The bottom line is that this was a great movie, and its style happens to be the biggest reason.

This is sure one of the best of best movies ever to produce and it's a privilege Some idiot top critics are lunatics though cynicism prevails (still) in their comments !

Fantastic clever film.

Marvelous classic heist movie with Robert Redford looking like Brad Pitt.
March 12, 2010
A brilliant re-teaming of Paul Newman and Robert Redford, and director George Roy Hill.

Other than being predictable, it's pretty much a perfect film that never stops being entertaining. Probably wouldn't be as good if not for its two leading actors, but they make it worthwhile.

The original 'Inception', this movie joins a select few where the storyline is at least as good as the actors within - a heady compliment when you consider the cast includes Paul Newman and Robert Redford. A movie you must follow intently to fully appreciate.

Very entertaining, especially when the music kicks in.

A game changing heist movie ! True class masterpiece !

It has a few twists and turns, but 'The Sting' is dull and not interesting enough. Maybe I felt tired.

a free-wheeling classic that stands as the exemplar for films about conmen and their schemes, a top notch cast is held up with amazing period detail that rarely shows its age, one of the best on several levels

Immensely clever and funny, The Sting is a classic for all ages of movie-lovers.

Four years after setting box-office records with "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid",actors Paul Newman and Robert Redford and director George Roy Hill re-teamed with bigger commercial success with "The Sting" which became one of the top ten highest grossing films of 1973. Set in the depression era of 1930's Chicago,it stars Robert Redford who plays depression-era trickster Johnny Hooker, whose friend and mentor Luther Coleman(Robert Earl Jones, who is the brother of famed actor James Earl Jones)is murdered by racketeer/gambler Doyle Lonnegan(Robert Shaw). Hoping to avenge Luther's death,Johnny beings planning a sting--or an elaborate scam to destroy Lonnegan. He enlists the help and the aid of the greatest con artist of them all,Henry Gondorff(Paul Newman),who pulls himself out of a drunken stupor and rises to the occasion. Hooker and Gondorff team up to take down Lonnegan along with their assortment array of scam artists and con men to settle all accounts on behalf of Luther while staying one step ahead of the mob and the police. With an assorted cast that features Charles Durning, Ray Walston, Eileen Brennan, Ed Bakey, and Leonard Barr, "The Sting" became a huge boxoffice smash grossing 68.5 million dollars during its first run and went to become one of biggest hits in the history of Universal Pictures where it was the third highest grossing picture of 1973, behind "The Exorcist",and "American Graffiti". Nominated for an impressive 10 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director(George Roy Hill), Best Actor (Paul Newman), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Redford),and Best Original Score (Marvin Hamilsch). It was victorious in winning 7 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director(George Roy Hill),
Best Original Screenplay(David S. Ward),and Best Adapted Score (Marvin Hamlisch). The success of "The Sting" was the next to last of the teaming of actors Robert Redford, Paul Newman and director George Roy Hill. However, four years after the success of "The Sting",actor Paul Newman and director George Roy Hill team up again but this time around for one of the funniest sports comedies ever made "Slap Shot" which became even a bigger hit and one of the best comedies to ever grace the mid-1970's.
