Tim Burton Out of Jim Carrey's "Ripley's"? (Believe It or Not!)
by Scott Weinberg | June 20, 2007
Discuss Article | Blog Article | Email To A Friend
Tim Burton might be finishing up with his "Sweeney Todd" adaptation, but is he now off the long-discussed "Ripley's Believe It or Not!" project?

We heard a while back that Burton and Jim Carrey would be collaborating on the Robert Ripley semi-bio-pic, but one source is now indicating that Mr. Burton may have bailed on the project. Which would be a shame because there's no telling what Tim Burton could do with the "Believe It or Not" material.

Carrey's pal Steve Oedekerk got a chance to work on the screenplay by Scott Alexander and Larry Karazsewski, but that seems to be where the project has slowed down. It's probably because of Carrey and Burton's busy schedules, but it also looks like this is a property doomed for more delays.

If Steve Oedekerk wrote the screenplay, I really want this movie to happen.

I will agree with everyone else, I really want to see these people make this film.
and I want to be able to laugh with Jim carrey again, instead of at him.

aww I was looking forward to this, too... hopefully it's just a matter of delays and not drop outs, I'd much rather it be late than never!

Carrey is a different man
What happenned to Jim Carrey? He's kind of gone nuts and become a Buddhist who makes only bad films instead of the comedies HE SHOULD BE MAKING. Maybe Carrey should just be written off, a flash in the pan. If Tim Burton left, maybe its because Carrey was trying to wrestle creative control from him, and Burton wouldn't have it.

There's a Newsweek article sometime over the last year where someone talked to him about his upcoming thriller, and the guy is nuttier than a fruitcake (Carrey, that is).

I think Jim Carrey has more talent that the completely overhyped Tim Burton. TB hasn't made a good movie, well, since his good 'ol days of Edward Scissor hands, and Pee Wee's Big Adventure. Big Fish was okay, but mostly because of Ewan Mgreggor. Please don't say that Charlie and the Chocolate factory was good, c'mon, it was terrible. HIs most popular movie, Nightmare before Christmas, he didn't even have anything to do with! Seriously, look it up, he didn't write or direct it... Hey, maybe that's why it was so good!?

cough cough Batman cough cough. Everybody seems to have forgotten the other two good Batman Films since Begins came out. You tell me what's the greater accomplishment making Christian Bale into Batman or Mr. Mom? Not knocking Begins, but Burton had a lot farther to go with his starting material.

To the Jim Carrey bashers, go watch his good movies like The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine, Man on the Moon. The man can act, and on IMDB 2004, Jim was voted best acting performance for Eternal Sunshine.

He produced it, which I think is just as key as direction.

Theres no doubt that Tim Burton is an incredible Director with popular titles under his belt, no real need to argue this. He has a unique feel to all his movies.

Don't forget "Sleepy Hollow" and "Ed Wood." Those are two of Tim Burton's best and most creative efforts.

Jim Carrey is a good actor, and a funny comedian in the right material. He's come a long way since his truly stupid "Ace Ventura" movies, where the few laughs in the movie came from Carrey's natural comedic abilities. He fared much better in "Liar, Liar," "The Mask" and "Bruce Almighty." His dramas are his best movies. Look at "Truman Show," the underrated "The Majestic," "Eternal Sunshine..." and "Man on the Moon."

Is no one bashing Oedekerk yet?

Say what you want about Tim Burton. Oedekerk's filmography includes Ace Ventura 2, Patch Adams, and what I consider to be one of the biggest abominations put to film, Kung Pow. I can't see myself liking this if he's writing, not even if they ressurect Orson Welles to direct and Abraham Lincoln to star.

Well, if they get Abraham Lincoln to star, I will see it, but I won't like myself in the morning.
