Audran plays Claire, a slightly off-kilter and adulterous woman living in Paris who is married to William (American actor Bruce Dern), a brilliant writer. When Claire begins to suspect that her illicit affair with her husband's smarmy publisher, Jacques (Cassel), is not exactly exclusive, she goes off the deep end. Wild fantasies, zany sight gags, and erotic repartee pepper the film as Claire, William, and Jacques act out an insane love triangle destined for disaster. Ann-Margret makes a sultry appearance as William's Italian translator and the subject of Claire's jealous delusions and enraged reveries.
