Average Rating:7.3/10

Consensus: It's predictably uplifting fare from Frank Capra, perhaps the most consciously uplifting of all great American directors -- but thanks to immensely appealing performances and a nimble script, You Can't Take It With You is hard not to love.

Runtime: 2 hrs 8 mins

Genre: Comedies

Synopsis: Tony (James Stewart), the eldest son of millionaire Anthony P. Kirby, has fallen in love with Alice Vanderhof. She's a sweet working girl who lives with her eccentric family and a few extra misfits... Tony (James Stewart), the eldest son of millionaire Anthony P. Kirby, has fallen in love with Alice Vanderhof. She's a sweet working girl who lives with her eccentric family and a few extra misfits in a decaying old house. It's a building that just happens to stand in the way of Mr. Kirby's plans to construct an impressive office complex. But when Grandpa Vanderhof refuses to sell, it's a clash of the cantankerous titans. Unfortunately, the fallout may send lovebirds Tony and Alice flying in different directions. YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU is a Capra-fied adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, and it earned a number of Oscar nominations and wins, including the Best Picture statuette. [More]

Very good, but not great, version of a good, but not great, play.

One of the most lovable characters in movies is Lionel Barrymore's Vanderhoff. He's a smart, carefree guy who magically changes people's lives and gives them hope!

The well-loved play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart is given the Frank Capra treatment.

There are still some laughs and entertainment to be found here, but forget about fidelity to the original.

To this day, there's rarely been a more joyful celebration of the unconventional than You Can't Take It with You.
