  • Michael Hampe's lavish production of Monteverdi's epic tale of love and faithfulness, in a brilliant new adaptation by Hans Werner Henze, was the triumph of several Salzburg Festivals. Drawn from "The Odyssey," the tale focuses on Ulysses' return home after he fights in the lengthy Trojan War and then is cursed to wander the world for 10 years. A magical, legendary tale complete with comments by the gods and by the figures of Time, Fortune and Love, this star-studded production by the first great opera composer remains a classic.
