I'd wager that if Disney are willing to re-release an extended frankenweenie (which they originally thought was too scary) they won't totally "disney-a-fy" his vision.

Actually, I would've preferred Burton to tackle American McGee's Alice, since that's more his natural style. Ah well, we shall see how this turns out.

As cool as this will probably be, I can't help but wish Burton would stop with the re-imaginings already. Of his last 6 movies, only 2 (Corpse Bride & Big Fish) have been based on stories not been previously filmed.

Urk. Such mixed feelings. I love Burton, but hate the MoCap. I love Disney's Alice in Wonderland, but I hate remakes/reboots.

Not sure that Frankenweenie really needs to be brought back though. That was kind of okay for a short film. I dunno if I could stand a full 2 hours of Frankenweenie though.

Very cool! Hopefully Disney gets on it's game and makes their 3-D movies look better than they have. So far Nightmare Before Christmas and Meet the Robinsons has been a disappointment.

If they can bring it up to the caliber of Beowulf, I think they'll be good to go

"I dunno if I could stand a full 2 hours of Frankenweenie though."

Good point. I seem to remember the original struggling to find enough story to fill 30 minutes. Given the current trend in remakes, the new version will probably spend an hour delving into the dog's backstory so the audience can discover just why he became Frankenweenie.

Not sold on motion capture movies at all. Beowulf just looks like a video game cutscene. The animation doesn't look impressive to me at all. Maybe it works in 3D, but I haven't seen it yet.

Bleh. With the exception of the exquisite Big Fish, Tim Burton has pounded his style to death on the same types of movies over and over again. He's like a slightly more versatile Wes Anderson. But I question why we need a new Alice in Wonderland. The original is my favorite Disney movie, and I honestly don't see what they can add. Tim Burton will probably just mash in his usual style, making that, while good, will be much more Burton and not enough Wonderland. (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory anyone?) Plus, why this obsession with CG motion capture? Visually they look like crap, like puppets that the director thinks the audience will stupidly accept as real people. Just pick a visual style and stick with it. Hell, it could even be puppets, as long as you're not trying to pass them off as people.

Ugh, this disappoints me greatly. I can already seeing the goth kids jizzing their pants over it.

I won't lie, I'm looking forward to seeing it already. It's the kind of thing that makes you think, "Of course!" but I do have to agree also that it would be nice to see him do a higher ratio of new stuff. And I'll take it however I can get it but if there's any story I'd like to see him do animated in the style of nightmare/Bride it would be this one. Don't know about

Frankenweenie...I trust Tim but I'm wary of people that want to stretch things out. It was probably short to begin with for a reason. But who knows, maybe he had this awesome idea about how to do it and when we see it we'll understand.

Eh.... Burton has pretty much a zero success rate on reimaginings. I guess a lot of people liked Sleepy Hollow, but I didn't. And, okay, to be fair, his Batman films count as reimaginings, and they were strong if not perfect efforts. But Alice is very similar in tone to Willy Wonka - what reason do we have to think he's learned his lesson since then?

And I'll tell you a big part of the problem - Danny Elfman. Elfman's spunk and creativity has dropped off a cliff these last ten years. He's gotten so homogeneous he may as well not bother recording new tracks anymore. Corpse Bride was kindof a misfire in other ways as well, but far, far and away the biggest problem was how bland all the songs were. Even Nightmare got confused by itself in the second act, but the brilliant music made it a classic anyway. Either dig the old Elfman out of whatever pit he's hiding in, or get another composer.

I agree with you on Danny Elfman but I think the directors he's working with may be largely to blame. It seemed like, after Batman, Elfman was commissioned to score every single comic book movie Hollywood cranked out. I can just imagine the directors explaining their amazingly original visions for the music: "Remember that thing you did in Batman? How about something like that?"

Elfman needs to never score another comic book movie and be hired by a director who will challenge him. And, after scoring all but one (Ed Wood) of his movies, Elfman may even want to consider parting ways with Tim Burton...for both their sakes.

These both sound pretty cool.

While I'm not a fan of the mocap the way Zemeckis does it, it was incredible for things like Gollum and Davy Jones. If Alice is a combo of mocap and live action, hopefully that means that the people will be filmed and the mocap will just be for the wacky creatures.

Really, the biggest problem with the mocap in things like Beowulf is using it for normal looking people. If they only use it for bizarre non-human characters, it could be great.

I WISH they'd ask him to make it sound like Batman. Or Beetlejuice, or anything else from his vintage years when he actually used MELODIES. Elfman used to be fantastic with melodies. These days it's all the same set of idiosyncratic rhythmic variations ala Men in Black. Which was cool the first couple times, but lay off already!

Okay, but you may still have a point about directors. Or producers, or somebody. Melody in general is dying in Hollywood. Maybe it's going out of fashion. But that's not completely it. John Williams is still pretty melodic, and yet he's also been on a downward spiral toward homogeneity. Maybe directors have just forgotten how to talk to composers. Maybe filmmaking is changing stylistically in ways that are not conducive to good score. And maybe there's something about the business structure these days that's hard on composers, or locks out new blood. But it seems like a generation of great musical talent is fading out, and I don't see anybody rising to take their place. It's very depressing. I collect scores, you see, but I haven't bought anything new for a long time. There's just nothing thrilling anymore.
