Based on the novel by Fred Uhlman, director Jerry Schatzberg's REUNION tells the story of a Jewish man who returns to the city of his youth only to make a terrifying discovery. As boys living in pre-World War II Stuttgart, Hans Strauss (Christien Anholt) and Konrad von Lohenburg (Samuel West) were the best of friends. When Hitler and the Nazi party ascended power in 1933, the boys were separated: Hans, a Jew, was sent to America by his parents, while Konrad, at first repulsed by the Nazis, began to sympathize with Hitler's vision of a reformed Germany. Fifty-five years later, Henry Strauss (Jason Robards), a New York lawyer, returns to the city of his youth to locate the graves of his parents and the whereabouts of his old friend. What he finds out about his childhood pal, however, becomes a startling revelation. Schatzberg's attempts to bring such a sprawling novel to life are greatly enhanced by famous playwright Harold Pinter's tightly woven screenplay. The impassioned performances of the two young leads, Anholt and West, also bring the story to life, providing Robards with the necessary motivation and memories to make his return to Stuttgart feel profoundly awkward, resulting in a powerful adaptation.
