Director Michael Apted has taken what could have been a routine courtroom drama and built instead a stunning study of familial love and misunderstanding.

His daughter Maggie, also a lawyer, has more conventional aims -- namely becoming a partner in San Francisco's largest corporate law firm. Jedediah believes that his daughter is selling out by working as a corporate attorney, but Maggie sees her father's defense of the "common man" as an excuse for self-aggrandizement on the job and negligence at home. The festering antagonism between the two comes to a head when they meet in the courtroom for a class action suit against an American auto manufacturer, where Maggie represents the car company and Jedediah represents the people. Reviews for Class Action
A two-fisted slugger, hammering across points about legal and familial ethics.
less a battle of people and corporations than a battle between a fiery daughter and smug father
Apted gives this smarter-than-average script a slick look and expertly develops suspense.
Managed to take one of the most contrived plots I've ever seen and make it seem, if not original, then at least way above average.
Class Action is one of the rare films that combines a truly affecting family crisis with a good potboiler.
It is the fierce accord between Mastrantonio and Hackman that distinguishes the movie.
How far we've come! Here, it's still the youngster -- and the woman -- who needs to be put in her place.
