Traumatized by the death of her fiance in World War I, Nina Leeds falls into promiscuity, dallying with the patients at the military hospital where she works as a nurse. Eventually she settles down to a safe, if passionless marriage with a kindly man only to discover, soon afterwards, that his family has a history of mental illness. Her affair with a doctor yields an illegitimate son, but despite Nina's love for the boy's father she cannot bring herself to leave her husband. Though honed down from its original stage length of five hours, Strange Interludes, in its day, was a daring attempt by Hollywood to bring a serious theatrical drama to the screen largely intact.
