Mario Van Peebles Is a Uniter

Star's travels inspired sci-fi screenplay.

Mario Van Peebles' long career has taken him everywhere from One Life to Live to Highlander III: The Final Dimension. For his next project, he's looking to the future -- and the Aztec calendar -- for inspiration.

Variety reports that Van Peebles is attached to direct his screenplay The Uniter, a sci-fi tale that will reunite the actor/director with his Hard Luck producers, Don Kushner and Brad Wyman. From the article:

"The Uniter" chronicles the journey of a political fugitive who escapes from the future back to the present to teach a 13-year-old how to use his powers to unite the warring factions of the world before it's too late for planet Earth.

Van Peebles, who aims to begin shooting in January, has been developing the story for half a dozen years. Inspiration for the tale came from the combo of his travels in India and the mythology of the Aztec calendar terminating in 2012.

Variety doesn't provide a target release for the project, but it does note that Van Peebles is also directing and producing a documentary titled Bring Your A Game, focusing on "the educational crisis in America and its relationship to the penal system."

Well, it is amazing that the man still has a career. From reading the synopsis, it sounds like a terminator rip off (man goes to the past to change the future).

If "man goes to the past to change the future" = Terminator ripoff

Then "man goes on adventure because of sage" = Star Wars ripoff

Waaaah??

Why doesn't he just go back in time a few years later when the kid is old enough to actually do something other have horrible acne and awkward erections. A 13 year old can barely speak the alphabet without his voice cracking much less save the world.

Hey, Sonny Spoon was a good show. MvP isn't bad either... just hasn't really ever had any good breaks. He may be z-list, but it's really nothing to do with his acting. Success in Hollywood doesn't have a lot to do with talent really.
