Great dance movie and a preview of what Lurhmann will be capable of in the future.

Synopsis: Super-hunk Scott Hastings is an ambitious, athletic dancer eager to break with the Australian Dance Federation's stodgy traditions and choreograph his own steps for the upcoming Ballroom Dancing... Super-hunk Scott Hastings is an ambitious, athletic dancer eager to break with the Australian Dance Federation's stodgy traditions and choreograph his own steps for the upcoming Ballroom Dancing Championship. Scott's mother Shirley, his prissy partner Liz and coach Les are up in arms over his brash attitude towards ballroom conventions. Angry at Scott's new passionate refusal to follow the rules, Liz quits, leaving him without a partner. When Fran, a klutzy beginner, approaches him, Scott doesn't believe she can make the grade. But once Fran and her family introduce Scott to the vivacious Spanish rhythms and sharply sensuous moves that are part of their culture, he realizes this is the very outlet he's needed for his talents. Together, Fran and Scott boldly challenge the Federation's provincial attitudes, making everyone green with envy. [More]

Reviews for Strictly Ballroom
An occasional lack of coherence inhibits our ability to truly embrace the actors and their twinkle-toed exploits
Lots of laughs, lots of style: Strictly Ballroom is a wonderful prelude to Luhrmann's next two films.
Though made for a fraction of [Moulin Rouge]'s budget and with no big stars,Strictly Ballroom is the better film in every way.
There's no denying that it's also an all-around crowd-pleaser, offering as much excitement and emotion as any movie in recent months.
The plot is predictable, to be sure, but it's fun to follow along... Highly enjoyable no matter what one's taste in music or dance.
There are weird movies about dancing, and there is Strictly Ballroom.
A delightful confection from Baz Luhrmann, fresher and lighter on its feet than Moulin Rouge!
