When the playboy is killed before her eyes, Fleuriot appeals to her mother-in-law for help. The bitter older woman convinces her to stage her own death in order to spare her husband and child the tragedy of having their reputations besmirched by public knowledge of her brief affair. Fleuriot follows this poor advice and, confronted with anonymity, heads into a destitute life that leads to prostitution and murder.
