Johnny Depp, Futuristic Vampire??
by Scott Weinberg | July 03, 2006
Discuss Article
Now here's a juicy piece of casting gossip that just might be true: Johnny Depp as a (semi-)vampire, playing opposite Will Smith, in Francis Lawrence's "I Am Legend." This, of course, is the long-awaited adaptation of Richard Matheson's frankly awesome story.

According to Blackfilm.com, "along with Smith, JOHNNY DEPP has been added to the cast. No telling which role Depp will play, but given his penchant for playing extraordinary weird-like characters, expect a juicy plum part, like the neighbor, now one of the living dead."

Depp adds color to any flick, so the idea of him going all undead-like, well, that sounds cool.

Matheson's tale has been brought to the screen twice before: 1964's "The Last Man on Earth" and 1971's "The Omega Man."

This one is starting to sound better and better. Will Smith and Johnny Depp...makes me anticipate next summer so much more. Pirates of Caribbean 2, Spider-Man 3, and now this. I thought this summer was going to be great, which I still think has. Now, I'm looking forward to next.

I hope it doesn't suck, and I hope that this isn't as bad as John Logan's unproduced screenplay of I Am Legend from way back. Should be interesting to see Johnny Depp play one of the film's creatures tough.

Johnny Depp as a future vampire? Alongside Will Smith?

Could this movie sound any more awesome?

it's really rare when two huge stars like this get together and do a flick! sounds like it has all the potential in the world to be totally kick ass!

p.s depp will be playing a survivor that smith finds named philip.

Johnny Depp usually adds a level of coolness to almost any project he's involved in. A Vampire opposite Will Smith?? That's cool. PLEASE movie gods let this be cool!!!!

What exactly are we supposed to think is "awesome" about Will Smith? He burned through any good will I had for him about ten craptastic movies ago.

I agree, he's really more of a novelty actor besides Ali. But if the script is good enough, and directing decent, there's no reason it couldn't be good.
