Synopsis: A liberal Australian artist, Norman Lindsay (Sam Neill) angers an Anglican bishop and Sydney's religious establishment when he paints an erotic portrait that finds its way into an major exhibition.... A liberal Australian artist, Norman Lindsay (Sam Neill) angers an Anglican bishop and Sydney's religious establishment when he paints an erotic portrait that finds its way into an major exhibition. When Anthony Campion (Hugh Grant), a young British minister, and his wife, Estella (Tara Fitzgerald), take an Australian parish, they are asked to stop at the Bohemian artist's estate to try and dissuade him from taking part in the exhibition. Upon their arrival at the bacchanalian studios the young couple become drawn into the seductive world of the Lindsay family and their provocative models who are, ironically, posing for a portrait of the mythological Greek sirens who lured men to their doom. The sensuous models Sheela (Elle Macpherson), Giddy (Portia De Rossi), and Pru (Kate Fischer) captivate the very proper Estella and lead her on a journey of sexual awakening amidst the erotically charged, guilt-free environment. Estella struggles to make her husband comprehend her newfound sexuality as they become profoundly affected by the free-spririted artist and his followers. [More]

Reviews for Sirens
Its eroticism -- good-natured, harmlessly naughty -- arises from character and material.
Aussie helmer Duigan seems committed to sensualist cinema: as a follow-up to Wide Sargasso Sea and Flirting, this comedy of morals and manners centers on a repressed preacher (Hugh Grant)and sexually wild spirits set against spectacular vistas.
