Television movie remake of the award-winning 1946 film "The Yearling," an adaptation of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings' story about a poor family struggling to eke out a living in the Florida backwoods -- and the coming-of-age of a young boy. After a rattlesnake bites Penny Baxter, he's forced to kill a deer in order to obtain an antitoxin from its innards. His 11-year old son, Jody, instantly befriends the animal's orphaned fawn, and the two play together in the woods. But as the fawn grows and becomes a yearling, it turns (however unintentionally) destructive, forever breaking into the small garden on which the family depends for food and money. Finally, distressed and at their wits end over the damage, the mother shoots the yearling and wounds him. When Penny proves too weak to finish the job, it is up to the young boy to put his beloved pet our of its misery...an action that will turn him from a child into a man. [More]

Unfortunately the story, a relatively disconnected series of incidents none of which are particularly compelling, works only in brief spurts.
