When a middle-aged man ends his affair with a younger woman, the vengeful mistress accuses her ex-lover's wife of witchcraft. Soon mass hysteria has broken out among the Puritans of the village, and both he and his wife are put on trial. If they are convicted, they will burn at the stake. The story, based on actual incidents that took place in colonial New England, parallels the anti-communist panic that swept through America in the 1950s, where hysteria once again destroyed the lives of many innocent people.
