A bizarre mix of explosions, histrionic acting and ridiculous plotting ... and it isn't pretty.

As a child, May Munro watched in horror as her family was brutally murdered in a contract hit by three Cuban gangsters, led by the reptilian Tomas Leon. Now an adult, she is hell-bent on avenging her parents' death. She tries to hire Ray Quick, a bomb specialist with a noble heart and "a past" to do the job. This leads to complications as Quick must confront his ex-CIA partner, the malicious Ned Trent, who now works for the Leon family. But as Quick and Munro work together to settle their respective scores, explosions of a different sort begin to ignite. [More]

Reviews for The Specialist
This film perhaps didn't deserve its horrible reputation, but very few people should have to endure watching The Specialist just in order to come to such conclusion.
With all the preening, posing and stretching, it's hard to know if The Specialist is an action movie or an exercise video.
Llosa relies on stock action shots and tedious exposition to get from scene to scene. You keep waiting for something -- anything -- neat to happen, but nothing does.
The Specialist is one of those films that forces the characters through torturous mazes of dialogue and action, to explain a plot that is so unlikely it's not worth the effort.
Ponderous, pretentious and acted with astounding indifference, The Specialist is a big fat bore with a couple of nice explosions. It's too somber to work as camp, and too tedious to work as anything else.
A totally dull story that thinks it can use various explosions to make it interesting, The Specialist is about as exciting as an episode of Dragnet, and about as well acted.
