This metaphorical drama, about the changes brought to French society by revolution, stars Gérard Depardieu as Chabert, a French soldier who served under Napoleon in 1807 and was thought to have died in battle. Depardieu is excellent (as always) in this intriguing tale of one man's quest to regain what is rightfully his, against the efforts of his manipulative wife, an antagonist who sets a new benchmark for greed and dishonour.
