Movie Info

Lon Chaney stars as the disabled gangster Wilse Dilling in this disaster drama. He is sent to San Francisco to discredit banker Mischa Hadley (William Welch), the victim of the gang's blackmail scheme. Wilse falls in love with the banker's daughter Gertrude (Virginia Valli) and decides to go straight. While trying to rescue Gertrude during the famous earthquake of 1906, Wilse is pinned under debris from a fallen building. He is able to walk after the accident and proposes to the grateful Gertrude. The scenes of the earthquake are obviously staged with unconvincing models, but Chaney give his usual fine performance in this crime drama. Legendary screen villain Walter Long appears as the Captain.more

Audience Reviews for The Shock

Again Chaney plays the role of a man who has something physically wrong, this time broken legs. His character is complex and interesting though, and he's a great actor, so it works. The story is sort of predictable too, but it's very suspenseful. I really enjoyed this thrilling romantic crime drama.
