  • Pocahontas
  • Disney's most beautifully animated masterpiece boldly brings to life a fun-filled adventure of hope, courage, and friendship. True to the spirit of every Disney classic, POCAHONTAS became the #1 family film of the year -- bursting with "all the colors of the wind"! Along Virginia's lush tidewaters, Pocahontas, the free-spirited young daughter of Chief Powhatan, wonders what adventures await "just around the riverbend." In sails the gold-loving Governor Ratcliffe, with his pampered pug Percy and a shipful of English settlers -- led by their courageous captain, John Smith. Joined by her playful pals Meeko, a mischievous raccoon, and feisty hummingbird, Flit, Pocahontas relies on the lively wisdom of Grandmother Willow. A chance meeting with Captain Smith leads to a friendship that will change history, as the Native Americans and English settlers learn to live side by side. Featuring a #1 hit soundtrack that teams Academy Award(R)-winning composer Alan Menken with Broadway veteran Stephen Schwartz -- and an all-star voice cast -- POCAHONTAS surrounds you with the riches of "another glowing winner in Disney's animated hit parade!" A surprisingly understated and mature romantic drama that just happens to be animated.

Though released during the Disney slump that came post-Lion King, Pocahontas was the last truly quality Disney animated film until Tarzan came along a few years later. It doesn't touch the aforementioned Lion, but a worthy part of your collection.

Any damage such revisionist history may impose on young minds is offset by the honestly inspiring thoughts Pocahontas offers.

A refreshing combination of old-fashioned animation and contemporary technology, Pocahontas is less about story and more about the artistic possibilities of color, detail and striking reality.

...Belittles the true historical figure of Pocohantas by reducing her to the status of sexy Native American Barbie.

Disney's 33rd animated feature, and its first with characters based on real people, is a stunning movie with clever twists, vivid characterizations, insightful songs and a surprising harvest of revisionist history.

Disney's 33rd animated feature is so good that it deserves to follow in the beautiful footsteps of Beauty and the Beast and earn an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.

Disney deserves praise for raising the ante on its ambitions in animation. Next time, though, a little less civics lesson and a little more heart.

Adult viewers, spoiled by what has come before, may feel that this film, which relates the legendary romance between a chief's daughter and English adventurer John Smith in the New World, is more by-the-numbers than inspired.

With an original score by Alan Menken and Gilbert and Sullivan-ish songs by Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwartz, the movie is the cartoon equivalent of a full-scale, high-quality Broadway musical.
