When an old farmer wins a piglet at a carnival by guessing its weight, be brings the oinker, named Babe, home. At first, the little animal feels confused and lonely. But a maternal collie, who just delivered her own litter, welcomes Babe into her family, and teaches him about farm life. Soon the precious pig proves that he can be a pretty valuable asset to the farmer and his wife--in a most unexpected way. Special effects allow the entire menagerie of farm animals to speak throughout this magical live-action tale. [More]

It's rare to see this kind of care expended on any movie; on a family picture, it's a small miracle.

It has been so long since I've genuinely cared about movie characters in a lighthearted story like this that I nearly wept with joy.

Through a mixture of imaginative storytelling, impressive animatronics, and irresistible cuteness, Babe casts a spell over all viewers -- young, old, or somewhere in between.

Babe is a movie made with charm and wit, and unlike some family movies it does not condescend, not for a second.

Unlike subsequent talking-animal pictures, Babe is a movie in which the human leads matter as much as the animals, or more so.

One of those rare family films that refuses to talk -- or rather write -- down to the viewer.

Babe provides a stunning revisionist take on barnyard politics, and may change the whole way we view pigs politically.

Though the filmmakers romanticize farm life, they don't sugarcoat the realities.
