I don't know anything about this guy's other opinions with regards to movies, and to be honest this was a bad review whatever his opinion, simply because it was extremely short and offered almost no backing or elaboration. However, to say that this one of the weaker historical epics ever to win best picture is spot-on. It seems as though any big historical epic in the past fifteen years that is even a little bit better than Troy or 300 wins best picture. Gladiator was another example of a big but intellectually barren blockbuster to be overpraised. On the box of this movie it said it was the best historical epic since Lawrence of Arabia. But think about the difference in quality! The dialogue is shitty, the violence is so overly gruesome it's almost farcical at times! It is obvious that a lot of work went into this however, and the cinematography and scale of the battle sequences and sets is impressive. But the narrative itself as well as the performances therein were base and unimpressive.
