Anne, the younger of Elliot's unmarried offspring, is a comely, dutiful woman but a deeply melancholy soul. She's been heartbroken ever since Lady Russell, a trusted family friend, persuaded Anne to refuse the marriage proposal of naval officer Frederick Wentworth on account of his lack of fortune. Finding himself on the brink of financial ruin, Sir Walter Elliot rents out Kellynch Hall while he and the girls vacation at Bath. An ironic twist of fate brings the now wealthy Captain Wentworth and his relatives to the Elliot estate as seasonal tenants. So, Anne's beloved Frederick Wentworth enters her world once more. But there's no certainty love will bloom again. [More]

The film offers the same pleasures as an Austen novel, as the audience sinks into a comforting, orderly world where life-shattering disruptions are handled with elegant ease. Full Review |

Following the novel with unhurried fidelity, the film is as faithful to Austen as Anne Elliot is to the man of her dreams. Full Review |

As gloriously romantic as it is giddily hilarious, Persuasion gives you a ruefully knowing smile as it sides with the wise heart. You leave the theater feeling better about everything. Full Review |

Austen was always fun to read, and known for her candid insight into human affairs, but somehow Michell and Dear seem to have left these basic ingredients out. Full Review |

This new film is every bit as charming and engrossing as Sense and Sensibility -- it just doesn't have a star-name attached. What it does have, however, is the luminous Amanda Root, who is simply marvelous as Austen's heroine Anne Elliot. Full Review |

Roger Michell's movie captures [Jane Austen's] insight into social hypocrisies and elegant sense of irony, with precisely understated performances and a subtle, witty script. Full Review |

There's a wonderful, unhurried delicacy about Persuasion, Roger Mitchell's adaptation of Jane Austen's final novel. Full Review |

Michell's approach to Persuasion indicates that he is the rarest of literary translators -- one who is genuinely interested in a work's themes, its characters and what the author has to say about the world in which they exist. Full Review |
