David Fincher Making Heavy Metal

1981's Heavy Metal is a cult classic. Its 2000 sequel? Not so much -- but that isn't keeping Paramount and David Fincher from planning a third film based on the sci-fi/fantasy magazine.

Variety reports that Fincher is spearheading work on a new Heavy Metal movie, "stamped by the erotic and violent storylines and images" that readers of the magazine have come to know and love since it debuted on American shores several decades ago. According to the report, the new film will bundle the work of "eight or nine" directors, each of whom will be responsible for his own animated segment. From the article:

Fincher will direct one of the segments; Kevin Eastman, the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" co-creator who is now owner and publisher of Heavy Metal, will direct another. So will Tim Miller, whose Blur Studios will handle the animation for what is being conceived as an R-rated, adult-themed feature.

The new Metal comes on the heels of Fincher's recently wrapped The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which stars Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett and will debut December 19. According to Variety, the director is also "attached to direct Paramount's adaptation of the Charles Burns graphic novel 'Black Hole' and is also developing Torso and The Killer for the studio."

is it official yet? FINCHER IS A BOSS. his style is detailed, specific and strikes a balance between elegant and gritty.

when you think of it, 'zodiac' was basically a masterpiece. there isn't really a way to tell that story, in its entirety, in a more precise or thrilling way. he nailed it, even pushing three hours.

and while he didn't really get his due for that movie, i think it strengthened his credibility as a top-notch dramatic filmmaker. the fact that he's still into doing projects like 'heavy metal' means his arrival as an A-list director hasn't gone to his head either.

bring on ben button. we know fincher and pitt works and cate blanchett can essentially do no wrong. sounds good to me.

Fincher is such a great director... Black Hole, Torso, The Killer, Rendezvous with Rama, and now this... he has such a good selection of potential projects to choose from. Personally I hope he gets started on Black Hole first, hopefully his movie will be a little easier to understand than that graphic novel was.

Why hasn't he got an Oscar yet?

I think I read about this last week on comingsoon.net. I cant wait to see FINCHER'S version of BLACK HOLE it would be a cool movie especially with him Directing.

The animation will be much better I'm sure, but it's gonna be tough to beat the mix of styles and timing (of the period) of the songs in the original. And especially the scoring by Elmer Bernstein, which gave it some cohesion. Maybe we won't have to wait 20 years for a digital version of the soundtrack though...
