Consensus: Sense and Sensibility is an uncommonly deft, very funny Jane Austen adaptation, marked by Emma Thompson's finely tuned performance.

Actress Emma Thompson both wrote and stars in this adaptation of Jane Austen's SENSE AND SENSIBILITY--a novel that perceptively examines the social manners and laws of early-19th-century Britain. Set in the English countryside, the film follows the loves and heartaches of sisters Elinor (Thompson) and Marianne Dashwood (Kate Winslet). The two have extremely divergent approaches to life: Elinor represents "sense" and believes in behaving with propriety and thoughtfulness, while Marianne represents "sensibility" and basks in her own emotions. Both women, however, experience confusion when their lovers, seemingly on the verge of proposing marriage, spurn them. For director Ang Lee, the film marks a break from his Father Knows Best trilogy, which examined the problems of the contemporary Taiwanese family. Reviews for Sense and Sensibility
This is a film devoid of egotism but full of soul, an intelligent work of art that is not afraid to get wacky at times.
The sensibility may be a bit off, but there is more than enough sense involved in this mid-Atlantic Austen to make up the difference.
What a glorious time is had by all in this wonderful adaptation of Jane Austen's novel.
A heartfelt story, filled with rich characters and compelling events.
A memorable film that brings out everything we love about these kinds of stories.
Rickman's small moves, his lowered eyes, his slight grimaces, are often quite breathtaking.
The film is packed with pleasing performances by stage-trained actors.
Sense and Sensibility is an absorbing, delightful, and nuanced movie.
[Sense and Sensibility is]...the first film of Jane Austen that I can remember having enjoyed.
