Disgruntled teenager Sandy is upset about his parents' divorce, so he is sent to Key West, Florida to live with Porter, his free-spirit, layabout uncle. One day, Sandy saves a darling dolphin from two dangerous dolts, and later discovers that the fish has followed him to his beachfront abode. Sandy dubs the animal Flipper, and the pair enjoy an unusual, frolicking friendship that lifts the lad out of his doldrums.
