He is conducting experiments in the hopes of inventing a formula that will instantly make one thin. After a disastrous date with Carla (in which a vitriolic stand-up comic makes Sherman his target), the desperate researcher swallows the formula before it's been perfected. The solution not only makes Sherman thin, it transforms him into a smug, obnoxious cad named Buddy Love. Buddy also begins dating Carla (and gets sweet revenge on that comic), but drinks more and more of the solution in an effort to erase Sherman Klump forever. However, the formula has a major side effect: Buddy continually transforms back into the corpulent Sherman, without warning -- and at the most inopportune times... [More]

Reviews for The Nutty Professor
The movie offers the uplifting news bulletin that life is not about being happy with how much you weigh but with what kind of person you are. This is where the movie starts getting sloppy.
The Klumps is a bit like watching Ali just a couple of years before he called it quits -- occasionally still exciting to be around, but more often than not going through the motions, punching well below par.
The Nutty Professor is, of course, a vanity piece, and it does serve notice that Murphy has lost none of his talent or ability. But it also demonstrates that he needs some guidance so he won't waste it on such lousy material.
This movie is a little too interested in easy jokes to bother with having a heart.
The Nutty Professor offers some great sight gags and some hilarious slapstick, but even four writers were unable to find enough plot and dialogue to justify the visual effects.
Arguably better than the last five Eddie Murphy films taken together, The Nutty Professor still seems to be playing down to its audience much of the time.
It took four writers -- including Shadyac -- to adapt Lewis and Richmond's original Nutty Professor script, and they managed to remove what little dramatic impetus once existed.
The laugh-out-loud Eddie Murphy movie was fast becoming an artifact, like a can of New Coke or one of Cher's old noses. But The Nutty Professor marks his return to form.
Murphy turns the dual roles of a meek academician and his smarmy alter ego, Buddy Love, into an excoriating exercise in self-disclosure.
