brings the funny much more than 1963 original
July 15, 2014
better than the originalm, but still bland, but still good

It occasionally feels padded, but The Nutty Professor is an awfully funny marriage of one-liners and sight gags if you have the stomach (pardon the pun) for fat jokes.

This is an unfunny, depraved, insulting comedy. I did not laugh once during the course of this shitfest. Eddie Murphy now sucks, and this movie is proof. 0/10

Remake of the 1963 Jerry Lewis comedy with Eddie Murphy in the Jeckyll- and-Hyde role as the shy, overweight professor Sherman Klump; who develops a potion that turns him into the exuberant and slim, narcissistic alter ego, Buddy Love. A great showcase for Murphy, this is a classic performance of uninhibited physical comedy that calls to mind Steve Martin in "All of Me." Murphy has often played the Buddy Love role but he has rarely been as affecting as he is as the introverted professor. Thanks to fantastic make-up and special effects, Murphy is able to inhabit both characters simultaneously in an ingenious bit of slapstick comedy at the conclusion. (Murphy appears as seven characters in the movie, mostly as Sherman's family members.) Everything else about the movie is routine. The pacing frequently lags and there is an excessive amount of flatulence jokes; an obvious self-improvement message is tacked on that feels patronizing. The rest of the cast is content to stand back and watch Murphy. The legendary Rick Baker and David LeRoy Anderson won the Oscar for Best Makeup. Written by David Sheffield, Barry W. Blaustein, Tom Shadyac, and Steve Oedekirk. Directed by Tom Shadyac. With Jada Pinkett, James Coburn, Dave Chapelle, and a hilarious Larry Miller as the sycophant dean. Followed by Nutty Professor II: The Klumps.

The makeup and (almost all of) Murphy's many characters work.

A very enjoyable and funny movie. This film was Eddie Murphy at his best, the main character was well written and to be fair, it was a good remake.

The Nutty Professor is just plain dumb fun, with not much more of a purpose than to get a rise out of the audience and make them laugh. The movie doesn't try any harder than it should.

The best Eddie Murphy comedy I've ever seen!

It won't make you laugh a second time, but the first time will.

I have to remain impartial to this, mostly for the fact that I saw this when I was a kid and, in a few words, enjoyed it. Apparently I wasn't a very smart kid, but after seeing it again, I'm split on it. This is mostly due to a lot of the unnecessary and wasted slapstick comedy for the youngsters and the more interesting ideas it presented.

Sir Murphy's most standout performance in delivering five characters in a funnily amusing movie... =)

Dr. Sherman Klump (Eddie Murphy) grows desperate to whittle his 400-pound frame down to size to win the heart of beautiful Carla (Jada Pinkett Smith). So, with one swig of his experimental fat-reducing serum, Sherman becomes 'Buddy Love', a fast talking, pumped-up Don Juan. Both the potion and Buddy prove to be uncontrollable!

also stars James Coburn, Larry Miller, Dave Chappelle, John Ales, Tony Carlin, Chao Li Chi and Doug Williams.

directed by Tom Shadyac.

Nice, fun comedy with Murphy on multiple roles.

Lol. The special effects in this movie are incredibly cartoonish. Very obvious that it was sort of trying to do something with effects that hadn't really been attempted/mastered before. And boy does it show. None of this detracts from a funny, heartfelt tale about a brilliant professor who must become someone else to learn to appreciate who he already is.

Most of the humor is derived from the side characters that Eddie Murphy plays. From his family members to the Richard Simmons knockoff Sherman watches on TV, Murphy is generally at his best here when he is having fun with these goofy secondary characters. Very sweet and sometimes hilarious.

A perfect comedy. Eddie Murphy gives a sympathetic and relatable performance as Sherman Klump, the makeup effects were incredible, and it's just so unbelievably funny at every turn, but with a good helping of emotionality in the plot.

Uno de los clásicos cómicos de Eddie Murphy quien logra interpretar no solo al auto-compasivo Profesor Klump y al egomaniático Buddy Love, sino a la mayoria de su familia haciendo de su estúpido y pesado humor algo muy entretenido.

An insecure and obese university scientist comes up with a formula to instantly make one thin. Testing the formula on himself, he finds that it also turns him into something he doesn't want to be. A highly entertaining and original version of the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story, as well as a remake of a Jerry Lewis comedy, this film gets its laughs but ultimately struggles to be anything more than an Eddie Murphy vehicle.
