Expect this ghost of bad movies past to walk quickly to the back bins of Blockbuster, where it should be filed under a helpful heading, monotonous and juvenile.

Consensus: The script gives Billy Zane little to work with, and thus he plays the Phantom as a friendly but completely one-dimensional hero.

What the Phantom lacks in superpowers and gadgetry, he makes up for in courage and heroism. Here, The Phantom is pitted against villainous Xander Drax, a expensive-suited criminal mastermind, who is desperately trying to acquire three skulls, each of which is located in a different part of the world. When united, the skulls give their owner magical powers. The Phantom, along with plucky displaced New Yorker Diana Palmer, set out to stop Drax -- leading to hair-raising, death-defying adventures for the brave pair. But can they thwart the clever Drax before it's too late? [More]

Reviews for The Phantom
The Phantom" doesn't measure up to the "Indiana Jones" films, but it is a good effort.
This is the kind of movie that offers modest entertainment while you're in the theater, but is forgotten by the time you get home.
This big-screen adaptation is just a pale shadow of its source material and the three Indiana Jones movies.
If Treat Williams were the Phantom and Billy Zane the capitalist villain would any significant nuances be lost?
Despite the pleasant feel and fun performance from Zane there's something missing from this superhero adventure.
Although the Phantom's origin may predate some of the later superheroes, you get left with a feeling that maybe they improved upon the original.
A throwback to the days when superheroes were basically cheerful, gun-toting guys in tights.
A lightweight action adventure, derivative in its look and approach. It's strictly for kids, but it's possible to appreciate the picture for what it is.
The Phantom is one of the best-looking movies in any genre Ihave ever seen.
An action-adventure Frankenstein's monster, cobbled together from pieces of other much better films -- and then nobody remembered to give it a jolt of energy.
