When an earthquake triggers a giant burst of lava from the La Brea Tar Pits, sending great spews of lava all over various Los Angeles neighborhoods and causing all manner of flaming magma mayhem, dedicated Emergency Management director Mike Roark rushes to the rescue, with help from a plucky seismologist. A no-holds-barred cataclysmic extravaganza, replete with "lava bombs" bursting in air, a toned-down flirtatiousness between the city's saviors, and the straight-faced "how-will-we-stop-it?" suspense factor of the classic Hollywood disaster epics. This is one of the best pure disaster movies ever made (not that it has much competition). Congratulations to director Mick Jackson for a job well done.

Like the substantially better Twister, this film insists on a thunderous, exhausting pace that inevitably becomes deflating.

A ridiculous script and mediocre special effects mar this ludicrous disaster pic.

Volcano is an embarrassment, albeit one of the so-bad-it's-kinda-good variety.

The visuals are colorful, but the script is just terrible.

It's your basic disaster-movie scenario: tragedy strikes, an adorable dog is placed in danger's path and rescues itself at the last moment, humanity triumphs over the awesome powers of nature, blah blah blah.

Hundreds of screen technicians obviously slaved on the effects -- and for what? A dopey subplot about a bogus arrest. Soap opera involving Jones' injured daughter.

I don't want to pay $7.50 to watch a movie imitate CNN.

These things can be done well or badly, and Volcano goes full steam ahead.

It seems films like Volcano exist mainly because they're expensive to make and thus easy to market as expensive. To wit: Volcano cost $90 million before advertising! It's an epic!

Volcano is an absolutely standard, assembly-line undertaking; no wonder one of the extras is reading a paperback titled "Screenwriting Made Easy."

More about spectacle than suspense, a very impressive production which is easier to enjoy from a detached distance than it is to get caught up in.

Memorable? Hardly, but the main actors are worth seeing, and that first act has so much promise it almost makes you want to forgive them for blowing the second.

There's no real suspense here 'cause you don't care about anyone.

Jones has that elusive quality, charisma, and uses it to full advantage along with his credibility and authority.

Congratulations to director Mick Jackson and writers Jerome Armstrong and Billy Ray for liberating themselves from the tedious demands of believability.
