He loves Louise (Rebecca De Mornay), but she's out to defraud him, in collaboration with Jack (Billy Bob Thornton)--not to forget her past relationship with the deadly Wolf (Michael Madsen). As schemes whirl within schemes, Philip retains an innocent, positive worldview--but even his faith can't avert a final tragedy. Director Alex Cox's film features a stunning performance by De Mornay, and the film's pleasures include her sexy/threatening exchanges with Michael Madsen; Delroy Lindo's eerily calm turn as a philosophical casino head; and Billy Bob Thornton as a sensible killer who's just too stuck on De Mornay for his own good. THE WINNER is a compelling film from a very compelling director. [More]
