In director Mitchell Liesen's vintage 1937 romantic comedy, Jean Arthur stars as a humble office clerk who becomes the toast of New York City after her accidental meeting with a Wall Street banker (Edward Arnold) launches rumors of an affair. But her heart belongs to a mere waiter, who may or may not be more than he seems. This delightful screwball comedy was adapted by Preston Sturges (THE MIRACLE OF MORGAN'S CREEK) from a story by Vera Caspary. [More]

Preston Sturges's imaginative script is one of his best, adroitly mixing his customary satire of capitalism and the class system with some dazzling dialogue and hilarious slapstick.

Preston Sturges wrote this Depression-era (1937) twist on the Cinderella story, and it acquires an airy grace from the direction of Mitchell Leisen.
