Jean-Luc Godard escapes from his period of highly abstract 1970s video essays for PASSION, a motion picture addresses one of the director's favorite topics--movies that show the absurdity and impossibility of making movies. Jerzy Radziwilowicz plays a Polish director in France who is trying to film a picture in the style of the great painters--Rembrandt, Goya, and El Greco. Along the way, he begins having simultaneous affairs with two women, Hanna (Hanna Schygulla) and Isabelle (Isabelle Huppert). As the hotel where the crew is staying begins to turn into a circus of egos and romance, Jerzy longs to return to Poland to witness the Solidarity movement's confrontation with the Polish government. Until then, he must find the energy to complete his film, amidst the seemingly endless onslaught of negative forces. Godard, reuniting with cinematographer Raoul Coutard (WEEKEND, CONTEMPT), presents another passionate commentary on the nature of filmmaking itself, this time upping the ante by painstakingly shooting the film-within-the-film. This approach gives the audience a better understanding of Jerzy's character, even if they don't fully relate to his scattered and frazzled state-of-mind. Nonetheless, PASSION is a welcome return to the theatrical feature world for the revered director. [More]
