A funny, hip, and vibrant action-drama, OUT OF SIGHT tells the story of the unlikely relationship that forms between an FBI agent and a career criminal. After Jack Foley (George Clooney) escapes from jail with the help of his partner, Buddy Bragg (Ving Rhames), he takes Karen Sisco (Jennifer Lopez), a sexy federal agent, hostage. Immediately sparks fly between the two. Eventually they let her go and leave Miami behind, heading directly for Detroit, where they plan to rob a former cellmate of theirs, a wealthy, white-collar criminal (Albert Brooks). When Karen finally locates Foley, a passionate encounter unfurls (edited ingeniously by Anne V. Coates, recalling Nicolas Roeg's classic DON'T LOOK NOW). As Foley zeroes in on his target, Karen must decide which side she's on. Soderbergh's film is a raucous ride through the criminal underworld, featuring spot-on performances by Clooney and Lopez. It's the supporting cast that makes OUT OF SIGHT so unforgettable, however; Rhames, Steve Zahn, Luis Guzman, and especially Don Cheadle deliver hysterical turns that keep the laughs coming as the tension continues to mount. Reviews for Out of Sight
While Out of Sight boasts a terrific cast, the spotlight rarely moves far from George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez, who deliver knockout performances.
Complementing films from Bonnie and Clyde to Pulp Fiction, Out of Sight delivers original material in a stylish manner.
For George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez, Out of Sight stands as their best work.
George Clooney takes the gruff, devil-may-care attitude of a Humphrey Bogart and blends it with the sexy charm of a Cary Grant to make Out of Sight the TV star's most successful big-screen venture to date.
It's refreshing to find a picture like Out of Sight, which is not only smart, but a great deal of fun, as well.
With a savory score by Cliff Martinez complementing its every move, 'Sight' serves up a cornucopia of great moments, lines and performances.
Like Get Shorty, Out of Sight has been adapted with deftness and fidelity by Scott Frank, who knows exactly how to translate Leonard's narrative voice to the screen.
Unlike Tarantino's plodding Jackie Brown, this blackly comic and sexy thriller does its source material, yet another Elmore Leonard novel, justice.
Great crime picture, with interesting performances, unique style and an intertwining, captivating plot.
Some reviewers have applauded Out of Sight for its nuances of character, but I and others don't see any characters at all.
With smart dialogue, good characters, and an excellent cast, Out of Sight easily smoothes over the rough spots in the plot and delivers on both the action and romantic fronts.
It's gritty enough to stay true to the source material's comedy-of-despair ethos, yet solid enough to pack a punch, and in doing so it makes for one of the better heist movies in some time.
It does not push the outside of the envelope, but it gets its job done.
All in all, this movie is a step or two above average. The writing, chemistry, editing, and momentum probably made up for any deficiencies.
[It] forced me to revise upward slightly my middling opinion of George Clooney. Pair him with Jennifer Lopez again, and I'll be real happy.
The impossibly glamorous and charismatic pair of Clooney and Lopez absolutely sizzle from their first moment together.
