Movie Info

Whatever is a starkly realistic tale of life among the stoner crowd at a New Jersey high school during the early '80s. At the center of the action is Anna (Liza Weil), a talented artist whose vision is frequently compromised in the face of her own fears. Her life is complicated by a pesky little brother, a preoccupied mom, and a best friend (Chad Morgan) who's got a problem with drinking and promiscuity. To cope with it all, Anna seeks lower companions and escapes into her own world of mind-numbing drug use and destructive sexual encounters. But there is a light inside the teen that, even in the face of much disappointment and misguided doings, helps her find the strength to carry on and pursue her dreams beyond the bleak suburb that shapes her. Frederic Forrest has a small role as her inspiring art teacher. A great soundtrack and original music by Walter Salas-Humara suggests that rock-and-roll also serves as a catalyst toward the girl's redemption.more

Skoog undermines the impact of her own film, but it still doesn't kill off the good performances by Weil and Morgan.
