The Winslow Boy might be triumph of style over substance, but sometimes, like in this case, style is what separates good from bad films.

Based on an actual trial that created a media frenzy in WWI-era London, THE WINSLOW BOY might have been conceived as a standard courtroom drama. Instead, director David Mamet (working from the play by Terence Rattigan) focuses on a family pushed to the limit by its fight for justice. The trouble begins when Ronnie Winslow (Guy Edwards), a 13-year-old naval cadet, is accused of, and subsequently expelled for, stealing a five-shilling postal order. The boy's father, Arthur (Nigel Hawthorne), believes his son's protestations of innocence and sets in motion an expensive fight against the immense bureaucratic machinery of the crown. The expense and publicity imperil the family--costing Arthur's suffragette daughter, Catherine, a suitor, for example--even as the case becomes a national cause célèbre. The story captures a period of intense social change; charts an early example of the "media trial"; and asks the very human question, What is one's good name worth? Excellent performances abound in the film, especially from Jeremy Northam as the charismatic lawyer Sir Robert Morton; and Mamet's wife, Rebecca Pidgeon, as Catherine. [More]

Reviews for The Winslow Boy
Arthur Winslow and Sir Robert Morton are as ruthless in their way as the real estate salesmen in Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross are in theirs...
A thought-provoking and ethically charged tour de force based on Terence Rattigan's 1946 play.
Well-made play that it is, The Winslow Boy still has the capacity to engage both the mind and the heart.
Intelligent characters, fully rounded characterizations, and a first rate group of actors playing with subtlety and charm.
...for all the craft and care evident in Mamet's movie, it still is a rather bloodless affair, more admirable than engaging.
Though Mamet has reshaped the material somewhat, this is still one of his more straightforward works; anyone expecting the twists and turns of previous Mamet movies such as 'House of Games' or 'The Spanish Prisoner' may feel slightly short-changed.
You might have to wait a long time before you find a film with both a family and a lawyer portrayed in such a genuine and likable way.
