The story, however, is still based on Oui'da's children's novel about a peasant boy with an artistic bent named Nello who is unfortunate enough to be separated from his closest companion, Aloise, and have his only caretaker die soon thereafter, leaving him with only his trusty dog. So, Nello decides that he must go to see the work of Peter Paul Ruebens, the Flemish master, and braves a snowstorm to do it.
