In this drama, a college frat boy struggles to accept his homosexuality after spending a life-changing night with a fellow fraternity brother. Pete, the latter brother, is a senior and upon accepting his own gayness moved out of the wild party house where Griff, returns the day after. Poor Griff is terribly confused by the encounter with Pete and so keeps up an innocent dalliance with Gretchen, a perky sorority girl. As time passes, his heterosexual best friend Todd, becomes puzzled by the subtle changes in Griff, who continues to see Pete. One night Pete and Griff have a heated disagreement at a coffeshop. Later, Pete is beaten up by gay bashers in a alley and ends up hospitalized. When Griff finds out, he is forced to make some difficult choices. Keitel's endearingly naive comedy leaves no doubt that it's a personal film written by an insider who's still close in age to the main characters, students sharing a frat house in an unamed school--actually, USC, where helmer was student.

As flat as some of the buzz-cut skulls of Griff's strenuously macho buddies.

Audience Reviews for Defying Gravity

Click the cover to read a summary. My opinion: guys who have already come out and those few who came out very early can have a difficult time relating to how difficult it can be. The basic difficulty here is coming out to yourself, being willing to admit that you are gay. This is not an award winner, but that doesn't mean it is not worth seeing.

Struggle and denial impede the love of a couple who must accept who they are and learn that love conquers all.

The film does a good job of showing what the bashing of Pete Bradley does to Griff his secret lover. It is a well done film considering that it was shot in just a short time. I am glad that it ends happy.

Niklaus Lang, Linna Carter, Nicki Aycox, and Don Handfield go on to become established celebrities. Unfortunately we have seen no more of Daniel Chilson. I think that he was very good in his role as John ("Griff") Griffith.

Perhaps the plot is too simple, but at least it is satisfactorily resolved.
