When three people were murdered in a New Jersey bar, Carter's dreams were destroyed. Driving home from a nearby club, Carter was erroneously arrested for the murders and sentenced to serve three life terms in prison.

Several years later, Carter's published memoir, The 16th Round, inspired a Brooklyn teenager (Vicellous Shannon) and three Canadian activists (Deborah Unger, John Hannah, Liev Schreiber), who believed in the truth, to join forces with Carter to prove his innocence. Their extraordinary efforts, commitment and love ultimately secured his release, leaving "Hurricane" to sum up his 20 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit by simply stating, "Hate got me into this place, love got me out." -- © 1999 Universal Pictures [More]

The story never radiates much beyond the corruption of Carter's lifelong enemy, Paterson detective Vincent Della Pesca.

The film is good, but doesn't quite pack the stormy punch you'd rightfully have anticipated.

Denzel Washington's performance in the title role is even more absorbing than the screenplay invites.

A deeply affecting drama of the human soul, thanks in no small part to Washington, whose immense talent has never been more evident.

By force of his acting skill, Washington transcends the script's and Jewison's flaws. The movie crackles when he is onscreen.

Denzel Washington [gives] a riveting performance that overshadows a murky interpretation of the story that plays loose with the facts of the case.

Without Denzel Washington, The Hurricane would just be another contrived prison-drama, whether or not it actually happened.
