When three people were murdered in a New Jersey bar, Carter's dreams were destroyed. Driving home from a nearby club, Carter was erroneously arrested for the murders and sentenced to serve three life terms in prison.

Several years later, Carter's published memoir, The 16th Round, inspired a Brooklyn teenager (Vicellous Shannon) and three Canadian activists (Deborah Unger, John Hannah, Liev Schreiber), who believed in the truth, to join forces with Carter to prove his innocence. Their extraordinary efforts, commitment and love ultimately secured his release, leaving "Hurricane" to sum up his 20 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit by simply stating, "Hate got me into this place, love got me out." -- © 1999 Universal Pictures [More]

What a pleasure it is to watch Denzel in action. He's a knockout.

Actors need to transcend the artifice of their characters and make them breathe for audiences. Denzel Washington has done that here, brilliantly.

Denzel Washington's performance in the title role is even more absorbing than the screenplay invites.

If you aren't compelled to re-examine your conclusions on crime and punishment, then you need to see the film again until you are.

A deeply affecting drama of the human soul, thanks in no small part to Washington, whose immense talent has never been more evident.

One of Denzel Washington's great performances, on a par with his work in Malcolm X.

The film is good, but doesn't quite pack the stormy punch you'd rightfully have anticipated.

The Hurricane simply loses focus on its strengths at times, wandering into familiar territory for its emotional catharsis.

Only one actor could have made a schmaltzy, predictable picture like this work as well as it does, and it's a good thing The Hurricane has that actor.
