Contrasting the erotic with the disgusting is usually provocative and can be funny, but not in this underdog comedy.

Not just any kiss, mind you — a big-time, hold-your-breath-‘til-you-think-you’re-going-to-faint, bona fide Hollywood-style kiss. But no matter how hard she tries, no one will kiss her. And then it hits her. Mary Katherine realizes the only way she is ever going to get what she wants is to become just like the people she sees getting those kisses in the movies. When Catholic Teen Magazine sponsors a talent contest at her school — along with a grand prize of a free trip to Hollywood and the chance to be an extra in a movie with positive moral values — she sees the opportunity to make her dreams come true. After all, everyone wants to kiss you when you’re a Superstar! [More]

Reviews for Superstar
A funny character with a couple of trademark catchphrases does not on its own constitute a funny movie.
Just picture an SNL skit that doesn't know when to end, with no musical guest or at least a few commercials to break up the monotony, and you begin to get the idea.
There's really no reason for anyone to see this film except die hard Shannon fans.
It's the first film in a long while to give a woman the freedom to 'get jiggy' with all-out Jim Carrey-esque full body humor.
I might just watch it again when it comes on cable in eight months or so. But is it worth even the price a matinee admission? No way.
There's a message in there somewhere, but I'm not sure it's worth seeking out.
Weighing in at 82 minutes, it’s nothing more than a one-joke SNL skit stretched into a full-length motion picture.
The secret of Mary Katherine's success is that she isn't afraid to risk looking foolish by trying too hard. The secret of Shannon's success is that she knows just how hard to try.
Mary Katherine Gallagher takes a little getting used to for the unwitting viewer. She grows on you, though, and, despite yourself, you get to like her quirky ways.
Forced bits of padding such as those just show that the concept really doesn't merit more than the five minutes its allotted on Saturday nights.
Here is a portrait of a character so sad and hapless, so hard to like, so impossible to empathize with, that watching it feels like an act of unkindness.
Watching Molly Shannon make out with a tree is amusing, but not even someone of her comic endurance can drag out that joke for the entire doddering length of Superstar.
Shannon offers a one-note performance that's ultimately more silly than sustaining.
I've seen this sketch numerous times on SNL -- it isn't funny at five minutes, at 90 minutes it's unbearable.
Mary Katherine's best suited for the small screen, so wait for the video.
Delivers plenty of laughs and succeeds on a level that recent SNL movies didn't.
