Not just any kiss, mind you — a big-time, hold-your-breath-‘til-you-think-you’re-going-to-faint, bona fide Hollywood-style kiss. But no matter how hard she tries, no one will kiss her. And then it hits her. Mary Katherine realizes the only way she is ever going to get what she wants is to become just like the people she sees getting those kisses in the movies. When Catholic Teen Magazine sponsors a talent contest at her school — along with a grand prize of a free trip to Hollywood and the chance to be an extra in a movie with positive moral values — she sees the opportunity to make her dreams come true. After all, everyone wants to kiss you when you’re a Superstar! [More]

Reviews for Superstar
The film is reminiscent of Saturday Night Live in two ways: both are about 90 minutes long and both are funny in about one skit in five.
The story is simple -- almost painfully so -- but it still could have worked had the screenplay been more focused and innovative, and the characters dealt with more satisfyingly.
Delivers plenty of laughs and succeeds on a level that recent SNL movies didn't.
Redundant, repetitive and not particularly amusing, with an unacceptably low gag-to-laugh ratio.
Weighing in at 82 minutes, it’s nothing more than a one-joke SNL skit stretched into a full-length motion picture.
Shannon offers a one-note performance that's ultimately more silly than sustaining.
There's really no reason for anyone to see this film except die hard Shannon fans.
The secret of Mary Katherine's success is that she isn't afraid to risk looking foolish by trying too hard. The secret of Shannon's success is that she knows just how hard to try.
Other than some slightly amusing moments where Mary practices her make out skills with a tree and stop sign post, the rest of the intended humor simply fails to hit the right comedic notes.
Superstar is considerably less fun than a marathon of Star Search episodes.
The script by Steven Wayne Koren bumps along, using musical numbers and fantasy sequences as filler in a thin plot.
