At the height of the war, 320 sailors die and hundreds more suffer devastating injuries when a naval vessel explodes at the Port Chicago Naval Magazine in California. The powerful blast shatters windows in downtown San Francisco (30 miles away) and is felt as far away as Nevada. The victims are primarily untrained African-American volunteers forced to work around the clock loading live munitions onto battle ships. When fifty of the survivors refuse to continue working without proper training and safety equipment, the Navy charges them with mutiny. Their case, defended by a young Thurgood Marshall (Morton), remains one of the most controversial courtroom dramas in U.S. history. [More]
