Completely weightless but also unpretentious and enjoyable in a relaxed way.

This is the question director/writer Brad Silberling (LEMONY SNICKET'S A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS) poses for his central character--an unnamed actor played by Morgan Freeman--in 10 ITEMS OR LESS. The answer lies amid the cheap cereal packets and decomposing vegetables of a dilapidated grocery store on the outskirts of Los Angeles, a location Freeman travels to so he can research a potential comeback role. Once there he encounters Scarlet (Paz Vega), a Spanish cashier who, terminally bored with her life and job, takes out all her grievances on the unsuspecting customers in her 10-Items-or-Less line. At the end of Scarlet's shift, Freeman's character finds himself stranded in this desolate outpost, so he approaches her and the two strike up a deal--she will give him a ride home, but only after he has shadowed her while she finishes her errands for the day. Freeman draws some well-observed comic material from the fish-out-of-water situations his character finds himself in, and Silberling proves his low-budget directorial chops after working on a number of bigger projects. 10 ITEMS OR LESS is a slight piece, coming in around the 80-minute mark, but the interplay between Freeman and Vega really makes the film, with the two actors finding a meaningful balance in the serious and amusing material Silberling has written for them. While Freeman's work is typical of the high quality expected of him, Vega is a revelation. Her feisty, occasionally downtrodden, and remarkably beautiful interpretation of Scarlet provides a strong indication of her potential as an actress, and bigger things will surely follow. [More]

Reviews for 10 Items or Less
10 Items or Less doesn't insist much more than the average indie exercise, but it's nicely made by Silberling, and if you've lost faith in Morgan Freeman, this is the film to restore it.
It's just a little film that strives to be likable, and is less so than it might have been.
Brad Silberling's new movie has nothing to prove, and not all that much to say, but its modesty and good humor make it hard to resist.
This is a movie of such consummate good cheer that it's difficult to walk away without feeling happier than when it began.
10 Items or Less is a good-natured but failed experiment in meeting cute -- indie-movie style.
With a less camera-friendly duo, this movie could have been a real dud. Even so, it's nothing much. It does have the great virtue of being only 82 minutes long, though.
A partially successful attempt at deflating Freeman's avuncular late-career image.
Silberling demonstrates an unerring ear for the natural, often discomfiting rhythm of two strangers tentatively forging a connection.
It's a shame that at the final checkout, the movie wants to choose paper, but instead goes for plastic.
These two loners both need to kick their life back into gear, and it's pleasant to watch them spend a day together and gain the strength to do it.
A film about nothing should at least be interesting, and while Morgan Freeman has done some great things in the past, this is just about his mugging for the camera, and unless you're going to be his stalker, that's not something one should be willing to
Slender as the script is %u2013 in both heft and ambition %u2013 it's hard to resist Freeman when he seems to be having such a good time sending himself up.
Insubstantial as dandelion fluff, this is a strange, muzzy little movie made palatable by Freeman's enormously charming, gliding presence.
Ten Items or Less is not landmark cinema nor is it deeply thought-provoking, but it's smart, funny, knowledgeable about life and people, and a crowd-pleaser.
Slight and wispy, it‘s a film that could only work with the gracious presence of someone like Morgan Freeman , who delivers an amiably laid-back performance.
Morgan Freeman has been playing tough-as-nails action stars for such a long time that it's a delight to see him so loose and easy.
