A handful of good to excellent performances (Lewis notwithstanding) are almost nullified by bizarre plot turns and a freakish, unsatisfying non-ending.

Consensus: Duets suffers from sloppy direction and stretches credibility. Also, the characters are uninteresting and it's hard to care about what happens to them.

Duets is a road-trip film about six individuals who throw off the binds of their pre-determined lives and strive to fulfill their dreams. The metaphor for this is Karaoke … the courage to stand up, sing and be free. They are: a waitress (MARIA BELLO) from Wheeling, West Virginia desperate to get to California to become a recording star, an ex-con (ANDRE BRAUGHER) unwilling to bend to the rules of society who sings with the voice of an angel, a salesman (PAUL GIAMATTI) who melts down while chasing the American Dream, a seasoned Karaoke hustler (HUEY LEWIS) who is disconnected from everybody and everything, an innocent Vegas showgirl (Academy Award® winner GWYNETH PALTROW) searching for family and love, and a young down-on-his-luck cab driver (SCOTT SPEEDMAN). Each is searching for the meaning of life.
As they converge on the $5,000 Grand Prize Karaoke Contest in Omaha, Nebraska, their lives intertwine, revealing the funny, raucous world of Karaoke bars and chain hotels that link the interstates of Middle America. -- © Hollywood Pictures

Reviews for Duets
I have a good feeling about this film and think it will stay around as a cult favorite and grow in status over the years.
I never got a sense from the film that singing to prerecorded music in front of beer-swilling, half-listening amateur singers can set you free.
Duets could have been filmed in Wisconsin, because it's cheese from head to toe.
An offbeat and occasionally quirky little movie that, like all successful ensembles, gradually builds upon its energy, depth, and momentum the further we get into it.
Wallows in karaoke performances, while spinning out a predictable variety of plots and subplots against the backdrop of ongoing road-movie settings.
Substitute 'bland' for 'blonde' and you've got a pretty good description of [Paltrow's] movie.
If karaoke were an Olympic sport, this American entry would finish out of the medal round. Way out.
There are ... a number of loose ends that are not wrapped up, ideas that are started but left unfinished, and far more karaoke singing than you ever need to see in your life, let alone in one movie.
Like many a phenomenon of the moment, by the time they make a movie about it, it's already passé, and thus it is with this.
Part of the genuine pleasure in Duets is watching these six people experience the joy of singing in Karaoke bars.
Instead of translating the best of his TV experience to Duets, [Paltrow] presents the worse in the form of stiff performances and contrived moments.
Disjointed, contrived and about as plausible as a karaoke singer with a scholarship to Juilliard.
